GREAT AFRICAN RIFT VALLEY

Great African Rift Valley is one of the biggest and most remarkable fault zones in the world. Due to its size and depth is clearly visible even from the space.

It was formatted 40 Million years ago and separates African tectonic plate from Arabic one. The fault runs trough Red Sea to Afar Triangle or Danakil Depression at Ethiopian coast. On the African continent it runs all the way to Kenya and Tanzania.
The fault divides into eastern part that runs over Ethiopian highlands to lake Turkana and over Kenya to Kilimanjaro and the western part running beside lakes Albert, Edward and Tanganyika. Teutonic grabens are long as much as 5000 km.
